North-East India in 2012 London Olympics

Pinky Karmakar
Pinky Karmakar, a class X student from Assam, will represent India at The Olympic Games torch Relay in London on June 28, 2012. Pinky will be among the torchbearers from 20 countries at the relay in Nottinghamshire. Pinky's mother works as a tea-plucker and father is a painter in a Dibrugarh tea estate. In the evenings, Pinky teaches about 40 women, including her mother, in the tea garden. She also talks to elders at village meetings on social issues, including child marriage, alcoholism and adult literacy. Pinky's dedication prompted the London 2012 Organizing Committee (LOCOG) to choose her for the torch relay.

Utpal Baruah, an associate professor in the department of design (DoD) at IIT, Guwahati, has been invited for the second time to participate in the Olympic Fine Arts-2012, an exhibition which will run alongside the The Olympic Games in London from July. The aim of the event is to disseminate and exalt the Olympic spirit. The Olympic Fine Arts 2012 (London) will kick off its exhibition on August 1 and continued till August 7. The uniqueness of Baruah’s participation in this exhibition is that after participating in the 2008, Beijing Olympics, his left side of the body was paralysed due to brain stroke in the 2009.

Ranjeet Gogoi, a Bihu exponent and his 16 members team have been invited to perform in the Indian campaign for London Olympics on August 1 and 2 to be held at Royal Festival Hall, South Bank Centre, London. The group will be performing the famous 'Bihu dance' of Assam. Besides, the popular troupe will also perform during the Olympic torch relay (Flame event) on July 25. Ranjit Gogoi can be termed as Assam's cultural ambassador. For him it has become a mission to promote and popularise Asomiya culture, dance, music, songs in western shores.
